As an international student, I felt overwhelmed by the size of the university and insignificant compared to my peers. Michael gave me the hope and motivation I needed to succeed. I worked tirelessly and ended up scoring a 98 in the course, my second-highest mark at UBC. Looking back, Michael was the best professor I had at UBC.

In-class engagement is the key for you to achieve high grade in this class, speak as much as possible or provide insightful comments during group discussions. He assigns quite a lot of homework, but he is lenient with the grading of those materials and values more on the learning process. A fantastic Prof!

He is a very good prof and is an easy grader as he mostly gives participation/completion marks (but not for all assignments) so you can focus on the material itself rather than the grade. BUT you do have to do the work (and there is a decent amount) so make sure to keep up and don't slack.

Michael is by far the best professor I've had in my 2 years at UBC and his section of WRDS 150 was the most interesting course I've taken to date. Since the entire grade is based on participation, you're actually able to focus on the content rather than the grade. I'm planning to take WRDS350 simply because of Michael.

Excellent professor who provides detailed feedback throughout the term and is a very generous marker. That being said, this course has a huge workload, consisting of a lot of reading. But if you put in the hours, you will succeed.

I avoid writing courses like the plague, but I had to do this one and I'm glad I had Michael. This class is challenging and there's no way around that, but if you do the work, give it your best, and communicate w/ him, you will be fine. Gives great feedback and no grades, which I liked. Hard to put grades on such diverse work from all great writers

WRDS 150 is a hard class, but Dr. Schandorf teaches it in an engaging way. There is a lot of work, with tons of reading each week. However, the reading leads to very interesting class discussions (class was only once per week too). On every assignment, he gives super clear and detailed feedback. Lots of hard work in this class, but a great prof.

Ridiculous amount of work and always justifies it with "its for your own good". If he cut the work he assigns by 25-30% i think it would be a really good course. If you are in stem and have an already heavy course load might be best to avoid this class for your own good.

I took this course last fall, at a time when my mental health was sh*t and I couldn't get the final paper done in time. Michael helped me get a deferred standing; then through the summer, he gave his free time to help me on my paper with guidance, compassion, and encouragement. Tho I failed in the end, he never gave up on me. Nuff said, I think!

INSANE amount of work. Wouldn't let people due the peer review (worth 10%) because it was past the deadline despite almost no one being able to meet said deadline. Content was boring and this class was the cause of the most stress I've had at university. I've heard other classes have different topics so chose something interesting to you.

I've always dreaded the communication requirement, but Dr. Schandorf changed that perspective. He is the most caring professor I've ever had, who genuinely wanted students to learn from his class. I cannot recommend taking WRDS with him enough.

completion-based marking. 7-day grace period. easy grade if this is your only course. But there is just so much work it's insane. I took 5 courses and I spent more time doing WRDS work than the other 4 courses combined. Also, pretty reading-heavy. Lectures are all online so you've to waste your own time. class is solely discussions about readings.

Incredibly self-righteous, do not take his class if you're a STEM student as he makes it blatantly obvious he's only there to support arts students writing skills (and this class is required by STEM's). Readings/assignments are mostly useless if you're not going into a writing major/career. Not sure how he stacks up against other WRDS profs, but GL

Amazing prof. TAKE WRDS WITH HIM. He is one of the easiest profs to get a good grade in for WRDS150B. Although there were a lot of assignments, we were granted 5-day grace periods which helped a lot. Make sure to participate in class discussions, but as long as you show progression through the class you should be golden.
