Incoming SOCI 102/250 kids: this is your choice. This is your man who will get you into sociology and criminology. Craig and Chris respectively aren't in it for you, they're all over the place (especially Craig's 102). Neither will be easy, but Elic's class is sane. Chris is interesting, Elic is interesting AND clear/organized. Craig is neither

Elic was the best lecturer I've ever had at UBC, he's funny as well as interesting mixing in games in class to keep you engaged. It does suck that 3 of the tests, 3 little assignments and the Course Project determines your mark. Even though all the exams were open book, the questions were extremely difficult.

Professor Chan has been quite an inconsiderate professor to interact with. Not only that, but lectures are almost never released on time even though they are pre-recorded, making all the students fall behind in class at no fault of their own. Would avoid at all costs.

Elic is a great lecturer, however, he does not post online lectures fast enough for it being a fully online course. He uses recorded lectures from past years (like during the worst of COVID) so I am not sure why lectures are not released on time. This was also the case with the syllabus being released late, just a disorganized vibe overall.

Elic was the best lecturer I had all year. It sucks that all 3 of the tests and the research paper basically determines your mark. There's no participation marks or other assignments. Even though all the exams were open book, the questions were extremely different.

Elic Chan gives you every opportunity to put in the work and see the good results. I was scared to take this class but Professor Chan had very clear and easy to follow lectures. I was dealing with personal issues that prevented me from getting a better grade but Professor Chan was the most understanding and caring professor I have had through uni.

very knowledgable + passionate about the subject, chooses interesting readings (which makes the longer articles a bit easier to get through). fair grader, but takes a while for marks to come back. good range of evals including group presentations, papers, quizzes. doesn't just recap readings in lecture so you actually need to read them!

If you like to read then Elic is your guy! I have never had a prof that is an actual joke and lazy. He doesn't have in-person lectures all his lectures are videos that he doesn't do himself, his test are multiple-choice but you have to pick up to 8 answers and IDK just don't take his class run away if you can.

Honestly great. You gotta read the textbook for this class, everything is based on it but its only 1 chapter a week and he goes over complicated parts in the lecture (textbook is very easy to understand). Midterms and final were open book, online, mcq and non cumulative so easy A. Material was very interesting and you can tell he's passionate.

I was kinda shocked to see so many negative comments about Elic, because I had an amazing experience with him. Elic was funny during lectures, and he was very kind and approachable. He also made sure to clearly state his expectations for assignments and exams. This class needed quite a lot of work, but it was very interesting

Took this class as an elective because I thought it would be relatively easy and I like soci classes. It was super boring and more work than it was worth (esp for an elective). The tests were multiple choice and open book, but to be successful at them you had to have read ALL of the textbook stuff and online videos were horrible & time consuming.

Horrible. The class may seem chill in the beginning, but as the course progresses youll see what I mean. Tests didnt test knowledge, but rather how fast your internet is & your control-F abilities. Final made no sense & was obviously used as a tactic to scale us down (I went in w/ an A+ and finished with an A-). Elic doesnt care about teaching.

In all honesty I really liked Professor Elic. He was super kind and made the best out of a hybrid class. Although the content on the class was hard, he made good sense of what he was trying to teach. The videos he posted were a great help as well. Overall a good prof and will be taking classes with him in the future!

an excellent lecturer, but slow to upload async videos. tests are an exercise in how fast you can ctrl + f your pdf of the textbook; lots of niche terms. definitely do the readings as much as possible. i appreciate the smaller assignments' focus on practical experience. wouldn't take again though, tests were too rough

The tests were a joke, there was a real disconnect with what he lectured on and what he tested on. Beyond that, the exams felt like a psych evaluation, the wording of the questions was as confusing as possible with 8 multiple choice answers, with no real direction on what would be tested beyond "know the concepts".

Elic is a decent choice for SOCI217. 2 midterms and a final with a paper and a few minor assignments. Heavy amount of textbook readings. He gave us in person lectures once a week and the other class was designated for posting pre-recorded videos. Although, these videos were posted very late at times and he was a little passive aggressive on email.

The course was a breeze but I hated how he scaled us down with the final exam and term paper. His class videos were not necessarily interesting and tended to go quite fast, which made notetaking laborious. Honestly, I'd rather do more challenging classes than have my grade deliberately scaled down for the sake of "academic integrity" (avg was 69).

Overall, very easy course. Not too many assignments and exams are straightforward. But it takes way too long for feedbacks to be released. Ive got my final grade at SSC but still havent received any feedbacks or grade for the term paper. I wonder how it is even possible.

Great prof great class. Very understanding and quick to respond to emails, and he made good lecture videos but the ones he borrowed from youtube or wherever wasn't as great, sometimes contradictory. Should've also set live office hours. EASY assignments/midterm, moderately easy paper, challenging final. Tests are all MC (up to 8 choices)

Easiest course I'VE ever taken but no live lectures. Lecture material was several short, concise videos each week, but sometimes different videos will define/explain the same concept differently and may be confusing. Assignments and exams were straightforward, however the mock exams are a lot easier and simpler than the actual exam (open book).
